Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church Leesville in Saluda County, SC began on January 30, 1898 when a group of 87 people met in the old Padgett house located near the present church to organize a Sunday School. The original family names included Ballentine, Caughman, Crout, Derrick, Eargle, Hare, Lindler, Moore, Oxner, Shealy, and Snelgrove.
On September 10, 1898, Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church was organized. The new congregation was received into the SC Lutheran Synod on November 5, 1898. The church site was purchased from Jemima Shealy and her son, H.L., on April 13, 1899. Worship services were held in the Delmar School building during the construction of the sanctuary. The sanctuary was completed and first used on Thanksgiving Day 1899. This building was used by the congregation until 1967, when it was sold and removed. A Sunday School annex had been added in 1942. This addition included six classrooms and an assembly room.
A modern brick educational building was erected in 1960, with nine classrooms, a kitchen, restrooms, and a large assembly room. Worship services were held in this building from 1967 to 1975. During this time a financial program was started to build a new sanctuary; plans were drawn up and accepted. The new sanctuary was completed debt free in March 1975. The first service was held in the new sanctuary on Easter Sunday and a Dedication Service was held on April 6, 1975. In later years sidewalks and driveways were paved, and landscaping was completed.
From the beginning in 1898 until 1977, Mt Hebron was in a parish relationship with nearby Union Lutheran Church. For a few years, around 1900, this parish relationship included Mt. Pleasant (now disbanded because of Lake Murray). In 1977 Union withdrew from the parish arrangement and each church called a Pastor. Mt. Hebron purchased Union’s portion of the parsonage located in Leesville and this was used until 1985 when a new modern parsonage was built adjacent to the church.
Since its beginning, Mt. Hebron has been served by the following pastors: J.D. Shealy (20 years), Y.V.A. Riser, Jacob Austin, O.C. Peterson, E.C. Witt, C.I. Morgan, Miles T. Cullum, Jason W.
