Welcome to Mt. Hebron Evangelical Lutheran Church! Thank you for taking the time to visit our website today. We hope that you get a sense of who we are by exploring this space, and that you might be inclined to visit us in person! We are located on Hwy. 391 going towards Leesville, about two minutes past the traffic circle. Sunday School classes for kids and adults take place Sunday morning at 9:30, followed by worship in the sanctuary at 10:30.

For over 126 years, Mt. Hebron has been sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in the Delmar community and with other neighbors far and wide. We continue to strive to be God’s hands and feet in the world, and we invite you to be a part of this ministry
Blessed by God’s grace with rock solid history, we are called by the Holy Spirit and sent by Christ. Through worship, teaching, witness, and sharing, we will be faithful to our heritage and responsive to the future needs of our families, our congregation, and our community with prayer, actions, and resources.
Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church Leesville in Saluda County, SC began on January 30, 1898 when a group of 87 people met in the old Padgett house located near the present church to organize a Sunday School. The original family names included Ballentine, Caughman, Crout, Derrick, Eargle, Hare, Lindler, Moore, Oxner, Shealy, and Snelgrove.

On September 10, 1898, Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church was organized. The new congregation was received into the SC Lutheran Synod on November 5, 1898. The church site was purchased from Jemima Shealy and her son, H.L., on April 13, 1899. Worship services were held in the Delmar School building during the construction of the sanctuary. The sanctuary was completed and first used on Thanksgiving Day 1899. This building was used by the congregation until 1967, when it was sold and removed. A Sunday School annex had been added in 1942. This addition included six classrooms and an assembly room.

A modern brick educational building was erected in 1960, with nine classrooms, a kitchen, restrooms, and a large assembly room. Worship services were held in this building from 1967 to 1975. During this time a financial program was started to build a new sanctuary; plans were drawn up and accepted. The new sanctuary was completed debt free in March 1975. The first service was held in the new sanctuary on Easter Sunday and a Dedication Service was held on April 6, 1975. In later years sidewalks and driveways were paved, and landscaping was completed.

From the beginning in 1898 until 1977, Mt Hebron was in a parish relationship with nearby Union Lutheran Church. For a few years, around 1900, this parish relationship included Mt. Pleasant (now disbanded because of Lake Murray). In 1977 Union withdrew from the parish arrangement and each church called a Pastor. Mt. Hebron purchased Union’s portion of the parsonage located in Leesville and this was used until 1985 when a new modern parsonage was built adjacent to the church.

Since its beginning, Mt. Hebron has been served by the following pastors: J.D. Shealy (20 years), Y.V.A. Riser, Jacob Austin, O.C. Peterson, E.C. Witt, C.I. Morgan, Miles T. Cullum, Jason W. Oxner, Earnest A. Felker (supply pastor), J.A. Shealy, J.L. Drafts (15 years), Charles C. Poole, F. Lavaughn Keisler, James E. Short, Barry T. Antley, William E. Jeffcoat, Elford B. Roof, Sr., John Lunn (interim), Tommy Lineberger, Mark Bredholt (interim), Timothea Sharpe and Al Potter (serving jointly), Mark Bredholt, and Christopher Shealy (currently).

Pastor

Reverend Christopher Shealy

Reverend Christopher Shealy was born and raised in Newberry County. He grew up a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity where he was baptized and confirmed. As a kid, music was a part of his life in many ways – from singing in church choir and the local community choir, to taking piano lessons and playing percussion in the band. After graduating from Newberry High School in 2005, he decided to attend Furman University in Greenville, SC to pursue music. Graduating in 2009 with a Bachelors in Music Education, he accepted a position teaching chorus and music appreciation at Newberry High School, his alma mater.

Although Christopher had attained a position teaching music, it was not all that he had thought it would be, and he felt led elsewhere. For several years, he worked a few part-time jobs, serving as the choir director at Colony Lutheran Church in Newberry for six years, an afterschool and preschool aide at his home church of Grace Lutheran, and as a math tutor for middle- and high-school students. During these years, people would sometimes ask Christopher if he had ever considered entering the ministry – to which he would usually respond with a hearty laugh and a definite “No.”

In 2016, Christopher began to feel an inward call to be a pastor – to match the outward call he had been hearing from others for some time. This led him to begin seminary in the fall of 2017 at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC (now in Hickory, NC). His education included several varied experiences. In the summer of 2018, he worked as a chaplain intern at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, SC. A few months later, over Christmas break that year, Christopher was blessed to take a two-week trip to the Holy Land, an experience which continues to shape in many ways how he reads and interprets scripture. From the fall of 2019 to the summer of 2020, he interned at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, NC with Reverend Steve Troisi, where he gained much experience in a variety of pastoral situations. Graduating in May 2021 with a Master of Divinity, Shealy accepted a call to Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church that same month. He was ordained and began serving at Mt. Hebron in June 2021.

In his free time, Pastor Christopher loves to read, play Pokemon Go, play board games, go on walks, and watch mildly scary (but not gory) television shows and movies. Pastor Christopher lives in Prosperity, SC with his wife Sarah and their two children, Myer (age 3 1/2) and AnnaGrace (age 16 months).

Organist

Marilyn Bedenbaugh

Around 13 years old Marilyn began playing for Sunday School Opening at Bethlehem Lutheran, her home church. As years went by, she played for services, funerals, and other occasions when needed. Marilyn continued to play until a few years after she married David Bedenbaugh. Marilyn later moved her membership to Union Lutheran and played alternately with others for a few years until her first child was born. Marilyn did not play again until coming to Mt. Hebron in 1993. Marilyn says that although it has been a big responsibility over the years, it has given her another church family and friends and it has been a joy to serve.
